What is an image? What secrets does it contain, what does it say, and how is it made? Does the truth determine the image, or the image the truth? Every film image has a before and after as well as an "in addition to," a "concerning" and an "in relation to." Memories are made of these layers, and we try to place them in a context for the purpose of formulating an impression, a statement. Images contain codes which are released to the viewer when the former are shown; his or her task is then to solve the codes’ riddles.
The Back of the Images is a collection of five different documentary works which on the one hand pose questions regarding the construction of meaning and on the other insist on actively taking part in the production of meaning and knowledge. (Dietmar Schwärzler)
