As the most established of artistic practices, literature and literary language held prominence and the periodical was a meeting ground wherein writers and artists constructed, debated, and refined their positions about modern and contemporary art and literature. This talk examines Nhân Văn (Humanism), Giai Phẩm (Works), and Sáng Tạo (Creativity), three periodicals that were published in 1950s-1960s Hanoi and Saigon.

Are they for young people, the ill and the handicapped? Do galleries treat the artists whose work they exhibit fairly? Why does the exhibition production team, unlike the curators and artists, remain invisible? Are people working in the sphere of contemporary art in a position to avoid (self-)exploitation and (self-)precarisation? What can they achieve under the present economic and social conditions? To what extent can they reject the criteria of grant applications or the necessity to produce constantly given the scandalous underfunding of the sector? Should positive discrimination be encouraged in gallery programmes if women and minorities are underrepresented?

The exhibition consists of a series 3D object based on real-life objects, photographs and memories of the artist and activist Alma Lily Rayner . Displayed items refer to the long-term sexual abuse, which the author experienced in childhood. Within Czech public space, this type of personal confession appears for the first time.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of public discussions on rape culture entitled “Why me?”.
The titles of the discussions refer to questions often posed to women who were sexually assaulted. Their formulation suggests that women are to blame for what happened to them. Given the fact that rape victims are mostly women, the questions are formulated in the feminine gender (in Czech). Yet it must be emphasised that the problem of victim-blaming effects all people, regardless of their gender identity. The discussions will be held in Czech.

Today’s world is very different to that which Lenin knew. Lenin’s first pamphlet was written by hand, while these day ideas fly around the world with a simple click of a button. However, if Lenin were to be resurrected, he would very quickly recognise many things that have not changed since his era – endless wars, growing inequality between the poor and the rich, harsh state repression, the plundering of poor countries by rich corporations, corruption, and the impotence of mainstream politicians. A different world is not only possible, but essential if humankind is to survive. In order to achieve this we need to organise. Our enemies have power via their organisations, and we need it too.

The term ‘nostalgia’ is composed of the greek words νόστος (returning home) and άλγος (pain). In its original usage the term referred to a pathological form of homesickness. Initially, the nostalgic point of reference signified a place to which to return is principally possible. Yet, in the last third of the 20th century the meaning of the term began to shift more and more towards a temporal perception: Today, nostalgia is understood as a longing for an idealized or even glorified past, often in commodified form. Consequently, a return proper has become impossible, which is why, according to Svetlana Boym, modern nostalgia has developed two different modi operandi: restorative and reflective nostalgia.

We can view the Middle East as a strange territory. Is it a land that’s remote, incomprehensible and foreign or is it, in this media age, in this age of a globalising world and in factoring in all historical contexts, “our” (Czech?, Central European?, Western?) space – a land connected to the culture of many ethnic groups and nations on all continents?

The symposium considers East European socialism and post-communist capitalism as opposing systems and explores the tactics devised by artists, dissidents and social activists to circumvent, escape or resist them. Issues to be discussed include the question of how connected the artistic avant-garde and political dissidence were under socialism, especially in the wake of the protest movements of 1968.

Is it a collection of individual viewpoints or does it have a group spirit? How does the magazine relate to the place where it is produced? What’s the sense of an art magazine in our-your context and how does our-your magazine relate to it? What is the relationship between creating art and theoretical reflection?
