The creative process behind this catalogue/book reflected the characteristic collective approach by the studio of Projektil architekti – apart from its members, an entire group of collaborators actively participated in it with their ideas and comments. Thus, a wide range of idea variants emerged as is the case of most collective decisions, i.e. the final variant is one of several possibilities. The immediate impulse for compiling this book was the arrangement of the exhibition in the House of Art in České Budějovice and the need to present the work of the studio as a follow-up to the previous exhibition in the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery and catalogue/book 01, with a focus on the Olomouc Centre for Ecological Activities, the Research Library in Hradec Králové, the National Technical Library in Prague, the Museum of Baroque Statues in Chrudim, and the monastery
garden in Chrudim.
The background for each “book on architecture” tackles the question how to present classical and contemporary processes, categories, and last but not least architectural forms by means of two-dimensional pictures in a book. However, there is a more pressing question related to the approach advocated by Projektil – how to represent architecture designed on the basis of collective laboratory experiments while articulating the public and the social, which is typical of Projektil? The authors
of this book chose an option that might be called a long-term social documentary. The members of Projektil asked the public to document the buildings designed by thein studio – occupants, visitors, and users. Their photo contributions, in their komplexity (without censorship) and the form in which they had been submitted, constitute the body (or the structure?) of this book. There were also several options for how to assort the spontaneously created material. The team subsequently decided to arrange the material on the basis of a more or less intuitive classification of individual and collective activities. Thus, the publication does not strive to claim that the activities carried out
by the occupants and visitors bring the buildings to life, but to promulgate that the project and buildings themselves are created on the layout of public activities. The documentation by cameras of the occupants and users is therefore an appropriate gesture. Thus, the most characteristic feature of the final book is the fact that, instead of demonstrating, it should generate. Even though the book contains 912 photos, it suggests associations between events, individual activities and forms, between images, words, and texts – the book should serve as a driving force for an entire range of synapses and not as a completed presentation.
