Olivier Hadouchi: From Parallel Cinema to Third Cinema - Militant Cinema in the hour of the furnaces (1960's and 1970's)

During the lecture, we will talk about various propositions of militant cinema dealing with the questions of liberation, anti-imperialism and tricontinental solidarity (in reference to Tricontental conference). In the context of New Waves, Young and New Cinemas all around the world, various filmmakers tried to mix political intervention with formal invention (like Godard, Alvarez, Rocha, Solanas...) during the 60's.

And we will see and discuss some examples of Parallel Cinema (born in the begining of the 60's France during the context of Algerian war of independance, before May 68) with J'ai huit ans (I'm eight years old, 1961) directed by Yann Le Masson and Olga Poliakoff, and Third Cinema (in reference to Solanas and Getino's manifesto) with La hora de los hornos (the hour of the furnaces) by Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino.
And will show images of the rare film In Prague /In Praga (directed by Mario Handler in 1964 who later shot an influential documentary called I love the students in 1968).

Films from Santiago ALVAREZ (Cuba, directed various cult agit-prop and militant documentaries in the 68), Yann Le MASSON (France, he also co-wrote the « Manifesto for a Parallel Cinema » in 1961 and co-directed Kashima Paradise with Besnie Deswarte and a text written by Chris Marker), Fernando SOLANAS (Argentina, he also co-wrote the manifesto « Towards a Third Cinema » with Octavio GETINO), Mario HANDLER (Uruguay, he directed documentaries like I Love the students, Me gustan los estudiantes or Aparte/Outside)...
