Art has always enriched the society of its time with aesthetic experiences. However, after modernism repudiated the traditional media of the hung picture and sculpture in their original forms, it was necessary to find a new model for mediating experiences for society at large.

A century of careful investigation is behind us and the longed for result is taking shape.
Long ago you could have chatted with your friends about what was on show in this or that gallery, or what altarpiece adorned a cathedral you visited. These days we are more concerned with where and how we can eat and drink well. And this is not the dumbing down of human interest. Gastronomy has genuinely been raised to the level of art, a new, calm faith in an otherwise hectic world.

The trip to organic markets, deliberations over the right wine and even longer considerations and analyses of food, long discussions about the aroma of coffee, gossip about a newly opened bistro, or the responsibility we have as consumers – think Fairtrade products. How else could we survive the working week without such pleasures?
